The Loren Hotels is thrilled to announce two new exhibitions opening in Paggi House September 15th and running until October 27th. For Paggi House’s glass enclosed Courtyard space, we invited Austin based artist Susan Scafati — well known for her large scale installations of colorful plexiglass and light refractive materials — to create new artworks in dialogue with the architecture of Paggi House. Scafati’s immediate impression of Paggi’s glass enclosure set against its historic reddish-maroon colored bricks led her to the abundant red, orange, and yellow flowers growing nearby — the peacock flower. Titled A Flower, Scafati’s exhibition will include photographs, paintings made from homemade dyes extracted from the Peacock Flower, and sculptures made with translucent, light refractive materials. The sculptures, some suspended from the ceiling and columns, others tabletop, will interact with the changing light from the outside casting spectacular colors and shadows within the Paggi space.
Scafati has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries including at Sean Kelly Gallery, New York, Sol Mednick Gallery, PA, The Blanton Museum of Art, The Contemporary Austin, and the Harry Ransom Center. Her work is in the permanent collections of Yale University, New Haven, CT, Facebook, Global, The Contemporary Austin, and Austin Central Library to name a few. Her major large scale commissions include a 2-story installation in Austin Central Library windows; 111-foot installation featured at Texas Cultural Trust’s Texas Medal of Arts Awards; and 4-story installation at Facebook’s office.
In Paggi’s Study and Parlor rooms, Austin based photographer Stephanie Duprie Routh will exhibit a new body of work titled Daydream in Memories of Youth. Routh will present a multi media installation that includes photographs, video, poetry by Dalya Sachs, and scent by Lula Curioca. The images of the many women Routh has encountered during her extensive travels across the globe, the poetry, and the scent are intended to explore the universal concepts of sensuality, beauty and aging.
Routh's award-winning work has been published by the RAW Magazine, FRAMES Magazine, PDN Magazine, National Geographic Traveler, Dodho Magazine, and The Austin Chronicle. She has two published monographs — Where the Ocean Drinks the Sky and Daydream in Memories of Youth. Her work is held in the permanent collections of The Wittliff Collections, CENTER Image Library and Archive, Texas A&M University, Concordia University, and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Routh’s work has been recognized by many organizations including awards via Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, IPA Awards and LensCulture. In 2024, she was nominated to apply for a Leica Oskar Barnack Award.
Dalya Sachs is a writer based in California and Texas. Lula Curioca is an olfactory artist based in Mexico City.
